Oldham College offers 1 year personalised courses for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). Our entry level courses, Preparing for Adulthood and Preparing for Work, are both focused on the key outcomes around employment, independent living, community inclusion and wellbeing.
These programmes will be very practical and based in our specialist teaching rooms or in real life settings out in the local community.
Teaching will be ‘tailor made’ to meet your individual needs and interests, and you will have the opportunity to access fully supported work experience within the College or a placement with one of our established providers in the community.
Skills you will develop:
Work experience is an important part of the programmes and all learners will access this over the course of the year. This will include elements of work-related activities, internal work experience and external work placements to match your EHCP aspirations. Our highly-motivated work experience team will work with you to ensure your placement is suitably challenging and prepares you for the world of work.

Supported Internship
The Supported Internship is an employment-based course open to students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) between the ages of 18 and 24 years old. It provides a combination of taught sessions and work experience placements and provides opportunities to learn work skills and build confidence in a real place of work. After the supported placements finish, it is hoped that Interns will secure paid employment, either at their place of work or with local employers.
Detail
The course runs for one academic year, four days per week. Each Intern will work towards an Award in Skills for Working Life (Entry Level 3) or Employability Skills (Levels 1-2). Interns will also work towards maths and English qualifications, from mini qualifications up to GCSE level.
We provide each Intern with a person-centred support plan, tailored to meet their needs and skills and match this to job roles within an employer's organisation. They then undertake a rotation of three 10-week work placements, giving them valuable experience in a variety of job roles.
All learners enrolled on the Supported Internship are supported by a Job Coach and Senior Employment Officer in the workplace. There will also be a dedicated member of teaching staff to identify individual requirements, and assess workplace knowledge and skills.
You will work in small groups with highly qualified and experienced tutors and Support Officers, dedicated to ensuring that your learning experience is fun, challenging and meaningful. You will receive support from your own Personal Tutor, who will closely monitor your progress to ensure that your learning journey stays on track. We have strong links with family and professionals, who will be involved in all aspects of your development.
The programme focusses on personalised targets based on meeting the needs of students' EHCP outcomes. Baseline assessments will identify students' starting points and their progress against targets will be closely monitored.

If you are aged between 16 and 18 when you start your course and are taking a course leading to a qualification, the tuition and exam fees are free. However, there may be some additional costs for optional trips, recommended text books and professional start up kits. We have a bursary scheme to assist with these costs.
