Jonah always knew he wanted a practical, hands-on career, something that would let him work on real projects, not sit behind a desk. Now in the final year of his Apprenticeship with Oldham College, he’s building the skills and confidence to succeed in a trade he’s passionate about.
“My Grandad inspired me. He’s worked in painting and decorating his whole life and ran his own business locally. I’ve always looked up to him and wanted to follow in his footsteps.”
After struggling to find work, Jonah’s uncle recommended the apprenticeship route, and it turned out to be the perfect fit. He’s now working with Ian Williams Ltd, gaining on-the-job experience while continuing to learn at college one day a week.
“Every week is different. This week I’ve been working in Lancaster starting a new job. We work on houses and sites across the region; there’s a real mix. It keeps the job interesting.”
Jonah has already worked on some high-profile projects, including wallpapering a large mural at the Whitworth Art Gallery for an artist commission.
“It was a big challenge, but I’m proud of what we achieved as a team. Helping with the whole gallery project was a great experience.”
Since starting his apprenticeship, Jonah has developed a range of technical skills, and he credits Oldham College with helping him grow both personally and professionally.
“My tutor Peter has been a big help. The training has really supported me, especially with more complex techniques. It’s given me the confidence to speak to customers, take pride in my work and get ready for the world of work.”
Jonah recently took part in the national Apprentice of the Year competition, run by the Painting and Decorating Association, and received an award for his involvement, a major achievement that highlights just how far he’s come.
“This apprenticeship has helped me mature, learn new skills, and get real experience. I’m hoping to carry on with Ian Williams Ltd and keep moving forward. I’d like to progress from Painter to Floor Manager and supervise others.
“If you’re unsure about apprenticeships, I’d say go for it. You’re learning a trade, building experience, and earning at the same time. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door.”
Jonah’s journey is proof that apprenticeships open doors, and with his talent, work ethic and the right support behind him, the future looks bright.
