What's On

WorldSkills UK 2022/23 update

WorldSkills UK 2022/23 is underway – and this year’s skills competition could be our most prolific yet.

Following a successful run for Oldham College in WorldSkills UK 2021/22, in which four learners made it to the national finals and three came away as medallists (Ben Catherall & Lily Hardiker, Silver and Bronze respectively in Graphic Design; Daniel Walker, Bronze in Foundation Skills Woodworking; Rabbani Khan, finalist in Web Design), we are already on track for another year of success.

Oldham College registered a record-breaking 139 learners for the 2022/23 competitions across 19 subject areas.

We can now reveal that we have another FOUR national finalists, who will compete to become medalists later this month:

Rebecca Mills, Foundation Skills: Hairdressing

Zeeshan Hassan, Foundation Skills: Health & Social Care

Kate Norton, Foundation Skills: Woodworking

Joseph Brooks, Graphic Design

Finalist Kate says she’s looking forward to the final to test her skills against the best in the country, while Joseph says his WorldSkills UK experience has been ‘amazing’ – and that ‘it just keeps getting better and better’ as he progresses through the competition.

We’re wishing Rebecca, Zeeshan, Kate and Joseph the best of luck for the finals!

It’s not just our learners who are striving for success, as four of our tutors became WorldSkills UK Educators earlier this year.

Tom Leahy (Plumbing), Ather Mohammed (Digital), Tiffany Park (Hair & Barbering) and Chris Shaw (Media) have been trained by Frazer Minskip, a WorldSkills UK High Performance Skills Coach.

The training focused on skills development, plus understanding how to raise standards and demonstrate excellence. Our WorldSkills Educators will inspire best practice in teaching, learning and assessment, and advocate for world-class skills in every setting across College.

They are now educating their colleagues as part of the Cascade programme. Our Educators recently finished training their first cohort of tutors, and a second group started their training on 31st October.

We’ve had some feedback from this first cohort – including…

An excellent programme designed to help staff in all programme areas raise the standards.

I have already started to move the learners from the minimum the curriculum requires to the next levels of preparing for employment and the need to have skills for work.

“An excellent opportunity to collaborate across Oldham College and share good practice with other staff!”
