Uniformed Public Services (UPS) learners were visited by the Mayor of Oldham at the Wildbrook Community Food and Growing Hub in Fitton Hill.
The project, which has seen a disused, abandoned allotment space be transformed into a thriving community hub, is helping to tackle food poverty by providing access to affordable fresh food.
UPS learners have been instrumental to this project. In the past three years, 150 learners have helped to redevelop this land through clearing overgrown land, pruning and maintaining plants and trees, and overall maintenance of the area.
The Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Eddie Moores, visited 40 learners at the hub in November, marking the end of two weeks’ work experience. He learned more about their contributions to the project, received a tour of the site and was treated to fresh apple juice!
Level 2 learner Tahiba says the experience has built upon her own self esteem and confidence, while Level 3 learner Mohammed says it has allowed him to come out of his comfort zone, give back to the community and develop skills that will prepare him for his future career in the police.
Well done to all learners who took part in this project.
