Millie, who is studying Level 3 Personal Training, and Pedro, a learner on the Sport (Manchester City) course, have been selected to take part in the AoC Sports Leadership Programme.
The programme gives learners the opportunity to build leadership skills while running activities that encourage positive physical and mental wellbeing.
As part of their roles, Millie and Pedro will help plan and deliver wellbeing activities for learners and staff. Their work will also contribute towards their course portfolios and lead to an AoC Sports Leadership Certificate.
Pedro believes that the programme will help him to develop and support others:
“Wellbeing and physical activity are important for improving fitness and mental health. It’s about having a positive mindset and staying healthy. I’m looking forward to making a difference to people who might not usually get these opportunities.”
Pedro and Millie were put forward for the role by their tutors, as they are student representatives who are already involved in personal development activities across the College. Millie also supports other learners by leading weekly gym-based personal development sessions.
Zoe Clair, Strength and Conditioning Lead, agrees that both learners were chosen because they already show strong commitment and leadership, and that the programme will also benefit the wider college community:
“They will be able to organise inclusive physical activities to help more learners improve their fitness and wellbeing. Being peer-led makes a real difference, particularly for students who might not otherwise take part.”
Millie and Pedro attended the programme’s launch event at Salford Community Stadium, where they met ambassadors from other colleges and took part in activities to help shape the wellbeing projects that they will deliver.
