Oldham College launches selective Apprenticeship Academy to boost student skills

We have launched a new employability skills Apprenticeship Academy to support ambitious learners aiming to progress into apprenticeships.

The Apprenticeship Academy was introduced this week and is intended to create a clear upskilling pathway from vocational courses into the workplace, following feedback from employers who have highlighted the importance of professional behaviour and work readiness, alongside qualifications.

The Apprenticeship Academy is open to learners across all subject areas. It is aimed at students who are serious about progressing into work-based training and prepared to meet high expectations.

The launch took place during National Apprenticeship Week and included a series of presentations to students, with local employers invited in to speak directly about what they look for when recruiting apprentices. This included representatives from First Choice Homes Oldham, who spoke to learners about career routes within their organisation and workplace standards.

For the College, employer involvement throughout the programme plays an important role in the Academy. Giving students direct access to businesses and mentors helps them understand what is expected in the workplace and also gives them a clearer view of how recruitment decisions are made.

Learners selected for the Academy will take part in a structured programme running from February to April. Sessions will focus on career planning, professional behaviour, interview preparation and employer engagement. Learners will also develop video CVs and take part in recruitment-style activities. Each student will create a clear action plan to support their progression.

As a selective programme, Academy members will be expected to maintain strong attendance and punctuality, demonstrate professional conduct and fully engage with all sessions.

Lisa Liddy, Assistant Principal for Apprenticeships and Skills at Oldham College, said the Academy reflects the College’s approach to preparing learners for work.

“What sets Oldham College apart is the way we work closely with local organisations to get learners ready for the expectations of work, provide them with opportunities to network with employers and deliver the practical steps required when looking for an apprenticeship role” she said.

“The Apprenticeship Academy gives students the confidence and practical skills they need to progress, while also supporting local employers to develop future talent.”

Apprenticeships are an important part of our local economy and are essential to meeting local skills needs. If you would like to offer your expertise to our future apprentices or are considering taking on an apprentice, please email apprenticeships@oldham.ac.uk
