
Studying Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Oldham College was the start of Tahiyan’s career journey – he has since progressed through university and now works as an Assistant Cost Manager.
Tahiyan describes the highlight of his time at Oldham College as “developing real business ideas and gaining the confidence to present and pitch them.”
On his course he also developed career ready soft skills including strong communication, problem solving and time management skills, confidence in presenting ideas and thinking commercially.
Another important part of the study programme is Personal Development, which helped Tahiyan to build further on his professional skills.
“I took part in personal development activities, including presenting my own business idea to the Oldham Enterprise Trust. From this, I was awarded a £1,000 grant to help me pursue and develop the idea, which significantly boosted my confidence,” he says.
Tahiyan credits his tutors for their guidance, feedback and encouragement throughout his time at college: “The support my tutors gave with ideas, assignments and developing my business really helped to build my learning and confidence.”
After college, Tahiyan progressed to university to study Quantity Surveying. He now works at a leading professional services and cost management firm in the built environment as an Assistant Cost Manager.
In this role, he ensures construction projects are delivered on time and within budget through producing tender reports, performing measurements for take-offs and supporting senior cost managers with project cost management.
Tahiyan says: “Oldham College not only gave me the qualifications to progress onto my Quantity Surveying course but also equipped me with the confidence and soft skills to really excel in my interviews.”
His advice for future learners is to “surround yourself with people who share your ambition and mindset. The people around you influence your focus and direction.”
