Ben is completing the Level 3 Advanced Sports Turf Technician apprenticeship through Oldham College, working as a Greenkeeper at Manchester Golf Club.

For Ben, choosing an apprenticeship started at a point of uncertainty.

“When I was 18, I was struggling for ideas of where to go once my education had finished.”

While looking through opportunities offered by the College, Ben came across the chance to train as an apprentice greenkeeper. It was an opportunity he decided to take, even though he didn’t yet know where it might lead.

“I came across the apprenticeship at Manchester Golf Club. It’s one of the most prestigious clubs in the North West, so I went for it.”

That decision marked the start of a long-term career. Ben has now been at the club for seven years. After achieving a distinction in his Level 2 apprenticeship, he progressed onto the Level 3 and hopes to continue achieving the same standard.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship. It’s tested my practical ability and my knowledge, which has kept me interested and helped me progress through the ranks at the club.”

Ben’s role as a greenkeeper is hands-on and varied, which he says is one of the reasons the job never feels repetitive.

“Some days I’m mowing grass or raking bunkers. Other days I might be driving tractors or building new features on the course. The variation keeps it interesting.”

Learning on the job suited Ben far better than staying in a classroom.

“After being in school for so many years, I wanted to work practically. Being able to learn on the job and watch experienced people do the work properly really helps when you’re learning a trade.”

Over time, Ben has developed skills that go beyond the technical side of greenkeeping.

“I’ve learnt people skills and how to deal with problems, both at work and in everyday life. I’ve also continued to develop my practical skills as I’ve progressed into Level 3.”

That development has led to increased responsibility.

“I now manage other members of staff and oversee a more junior apprentice myself, which feels like a big step. ”

Ben also credits the support he received from the College, particularly from his tutor, Phil.

“The College has always helped when I’ve needed it. Phil made sure I understood the course content and that I was properly prepared for my end point assessment. The learning materials were strong and gave us the best chance of hitting merit or distinction grades.”

Asked what made Oldham College the right choice for him, Ben explains how the support went beyond his apprenticeship training.

“Oldham College was the right choice for me because they offered a wide range of options and helped me choose a career path when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. They supported me at every stage of my apprenticeship and also helped with essential qualifications, such as English and maths, that some people may not have achieved at school. That extra support makes a big difference and means more people can succeed.”

Looking ahead, Ben has clear ambitions for his future in the industry.

“When I finish my Level 3, I want to keep developing professionally. I’d like to gain extra qualifications, such as my digger licence and tree felling courses. Longer term, I want to become a deputy course manager and eventually a course manager.”

For Ben, the apprenticeship route offered direction when he needed it most.

“Doing an apprenticeship doesn’t mean you stop learning. You’re still getting your education, but you’re also working and building a career at the same time.”

His advice to others considering their next step is simple.

“If you’re struggling to decide what to do next, have a look at apprenticeships and don’t be scared to take the leap. It worked for me.”
