Samuel, who is studying the T Level in Laboratory Science at Oldham College chose the course because it offered a great compromise between exams and learning theory whilst also giving him the opportunity to gain industry experience.
“I wanted to get hands-on experience in the science industry from an early stage in my learning and also gain a qualification that will help me progress onto a university course in physics.”
As part of the T Level Samuel has completed a 45-day industry placement, which was one of the standout moments of his journey so far. Samuel completed his placement within the chemistry teaching labs at the University of Manchester.
“My placement was an enjoyable experience and it helped me learn more about the different careers available in a laboratory environment. During my time there, I worked in the teaching laboratories, helping students by preparing the chemicals and glassware needed for their practical work.
“During my course I learnt a lot about the types of everyday practices and roles that are necessary in the industry. I have also really enjoyed the scientific trips to interesting places such as museums and taking part in competitions like WorldSkills UK.”
Sam has grown in confidence throughout his T Level, particularly in his presentation skills, which are an important part of working in the scientific sector. He also feels that he has benefited from the support and guidance provided by his tutors and college staff.
“Staff at the college were very supportive. They have helped me a great deal, making lessons engaging and helping me learn a lot throughout the course.
“My advice to someone thinking of doing this course would be to go for it! The experience you gain from placement makes it so much easier in future when you go to university or into the workplace – it gives you a massive head start.”
