For employers, they can provide an opportunity to introduce young people into the workplace with additional support and lower commitment, while helping to develop future talent within your organisation.
Our Apprenticeships team can explain how Foundation Apprenticeships work and whether they may be suitable for your organisation.

All employers must have an Apprenticeship Service account to reserve apprenticeship funding, manage apprenticeships and access levy transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you're considering hiring an apprentice or want to support your existing staff to do an apprenticeship, our FAQs provide all the information you need to understand the process.
Why choose Oldham College?
Oldham College has a long-established reputation for delivering high-quality technical education and apprenticeships. We work closely with employers across Greater Manchester to ensure our training reflects current industry needs, while providing dedicated support throughout the apprenticeship journey.
Who is eligible to become an apprentice?
Apprentices can be new recruits or existing employees looking to develop new skills. There is no upper age limit, and apprenticeships are suitable for people at different stages of their careers. Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements set by the government and be employed in a role that allows them to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the apprenticeship standard.
Who provides the training and support?
Oldham College delivers the apprenticeship training through experienced industry specialists, while the employer provides valuable workplace experience.
You’ll appoint a workplace mentor or line manager who provides day-to-day support and helps the apprentice develop practical skills.
Oldham College works alongside your team to monitor progress and provide advice whenever needed, and each apprentice receives regular reviews and support from a dedicated assessor, ensuring they stay on track throughout their programme.
Who pays for apprenticeship training and how much does it cost?
Costs vary depending on your organisation, the apprenticeship programme and your funding status, as well as whether you pay the Apprenticeship Levy. Many employers benefit from government funding, and additional financial support may be available in certain circumstances.
Oldham College will guide you through the funding process, explain your contribution (if applicable) and help you maximise the funding available.
What are my responsibilities as an employer?
As an employer you’ll employ the apprentice, provide meaningful work, pay at least the appropriate wage, allow time for off-the-job training, support their development and work closely with Oldham College throughout the programme.
Off-the-job training is protected learning time that helps apprentices develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for their role. This may take place at Oldham College, in your workplace or online, depending on the apprenticeship programme.
How long does an apprenticeship last?
Most apprenticeships last between 12 months and four years, depending on the level and occupation. During this time, apprentices work while completing their training and assessment.
Apprentices are employed under a contract of employment and work agreed hours with their employer. Their programme includes dedicated off-the-job training within their normal paid working hours.
Where does the apprentice complete their training?
Apprentices gain practical experience within your business while attending planned training sessions delivered by Oldham College. Depending on the programme, learning may take place on campus, online or in the workplace.
What qualifications will my apprentice achieve?
The qualification depends on the apprenticeship standard. Apprentices gain industry-recognised knowledge, skills and behaviours, and where required, additional qualifications relevant to their occupation before completing an End-Point Assessment.
