University Campus Oldham learner wins brand agency placement

A University Campus OldhamĀ (UCO)Ā student hasĀ wonĀ a placementĀ withĀ a London-basedĀ brand studio.Ā

For the past two years, Red Dot Studio has set the branding brief that BA (Hons) Graphic Design students work on as part of theirĀ ā€˜Graphic Communication in Context’ module – giving students experience of workingĀ in their industry and a valuable insight into their future careers.Ā

Lewis Greenhalgh, second year studentĀ at UCO,Ā earned first place for his creative interpretation of the brief:Ā ā€˜Revive a local gem. Breathe new life into your neighbourhood’s hidden treasure.’

Lewis choseĀ to shine a spotlight onĀ HillbilliesĀ Snooker & Pool Club,Ā on Huddersfield Road in Oldham. He said: ā€œIĀ passĀ Hillbillies every dayĀ on my way to campus,Ā andĀ itĀ jumpsĀ out to me every time I see it.ā€Ā

TheĀ theoreticalĀ rebrand includedĀ a new logo, typeface, signageĀ and more, helpingĀ to captureĀ the establishment’sĀ character and charm.Ā

Competing againstĀ otherĀ Creative students at the University of Lancashire and Norwich University of Arts,Ā Lewis’sĀ design cameĀ out on topĀ andĀ earnedĀ himĀ a month’s work placement with Red Dot Studio.Ā

ReflectingĀ on the experience, Lewis said:Ā ā€œI’veĀ learnedĀ a lot from this:Ā that the goal of branding is to completely capture the client’sĀ vibe and that the concept behindĀ what’sĀ created,Ā and the tone of voice,Ā is 10x more important than super polished craft. I alsoĀ foundĀ designing for HillbilliesĀ enjoyable,Ā whichĀ elevated the experience.Ā

ā€œWinning the placementĀ willĀ help me toĀ gainĀ invaluableĀ insightĀ into this industry,Ā andĀ it may alsoĀ lead to more placement opportunities down the line. As someoneĀ aspiring toĀ exploreĀ agency workĀ after I graduate, IĀ can’tĀ wait.ā€Ā

Lewis speaks highly of the support he received during this project. He says:Ā

ā€œThe supportĀ I’veĀ received at UCO has been nothing short of amazing. There are major benefits to smaller classes, andĀ having access to one-on-oneĀ support and feedbackĀ helped me to winĀ the competitionĀ –Ā without a doubt!Ā There’sĀ a big emphasisĀ at UCOĀ on findingĀ good ideasĀ and developing them as much as possible to achieve the best outcome,Ā whichĀ kept me ambitious throughout the project.ā€Ā

Brandon Thomas, LecturerĀ –Ā Graphic Design at UCO, said:Ā

ā€œTo win an award a student must be well attended, hardworking,Ā receptiveĀ and willing. This year, Lewis has shown us he isĀ allĀ these things.Ā It’sĀ no easy task to come out on top against some of the country’s top design institutions, but Lewis has run with the brief and secured himself a paid placement in a London agency. From this, he will gain prestige and lifelong contacts – all before starting the final year of his degree.ā€Ā
