Memorial commemorates Manchester Arena victims on seventh anniversary

Today (22nd May) is the seventh anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack.

This is always a poignant time as we lost one of our own learning community, Lisa Lees, in this devastating incident. We will also be thinking about the other members of the Oldham College family who were present, and all those directly or indirectly affected by the events of 22nd May 2017.

A commemorative memorial is now on display on campus.

This is the result of a collaboration between 32 staff members and students from departments across Oldham College and University Campus Oldham. It has taken almost four months of handiwork – and countless balls of yarn – to complete.

Tracy Greenwood, Learning Advisor, designed this memorial of leaves, vines and forget-me-not flowers alongside a wall of ‘honeycomb’ hexagons with 22 bees – each representing one of the victims – and many other people gave their time to knit or crochet part of this special display.

They were also assisted by Level 1 & 2 Art and Design learners who created the ‘Oldham College Remembers’ hand-printed bunting, plus volunteers in Carpentry & Joinery and Painting & Decorating who crafted and painted the frame.

Laura Butterworth, Learning Resource Team Leader, said: “It’s been so moving to see so many staff and students from Oldham College and UCO work together on this project since February, and I’m so grateful to everyone who has contributed.

“I would especially like to thank Tracy Greenwood who is responsible for this whole project: her creativity and dedication has resulted in this beautiful display, honouring those we have lost.”
