Employers could access up to £8,000 in support to recruit young apprentices

New government funding and incentives are making it more affordable for employers to recruit and train young apprentices.

We are encouraging employers to find out what support they could be eligible for, with training for eligible apprentices aged 16 to 24 now 100% government funded.

The changes apply to non-levy employers and can also benefit larger employers that pay into the Growth and Skills Levy if they have used the funds in their levy account.

A range of additional financial incentives are available depending on the employer and apprentice, including:

Up to £2,000 for eligible non-levy employers recruiting a new apprentice aged 16 to 24 from October 2026

£1,000 for employing an apprentice aged 16 to 18, or an apprentice aged 19 to 24 who has been in care or has an Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP)

Up to £2,000 for employers taking on an eligible Foundation Apprentice

£3,000 through the Youth Jobs Grant for eligible employers recruiting a young person aged 18 to 24 who has been out of work and claiming Universal Credit for six months or more.

Eligible employers may be able to combine payments and could also benefit from Employer National Insurance relief for apprentices under the age of 25.

Apprenticeship funding isn’t just for new recruits. It can also be used to develop existing employees, helping employers build the skills they need within their current workforce.

Lisa Liddy, Assistant Principal for Apprenticeships and Skills at Oldham College, said:

“This is really positive news for employers looking to invest in their workforce. With fully funded training available for eligible younger apprentices, alongside new financial incentives, there is even more support available to help businesses develop the skills they need.

“Our Apprenticeships team can help employers understand what funding and incentives they may be eligible for and how they can make the most of the support available.”

We work with employers to identify their skills needs, find the right apprentice and understand the funding and support available.

Employers can find out more about apprenticeships, including funding incentives and recruitment, at Oldham College Connect: Business meets education on Thursday 12th November at 12 noon at the Oldham College Business Centre.

The event will also give businesses the opportunity to explore our facilities, discuss their business and workforce needs with our teams, and find out about adult courses and staff training.
