Course Details
What Will I Study?
All new learners interested in Hairdressing start on Skills Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing. You will study theoretical aspects of Hairdressing, and apply these aspects during practical assessments tasks.
Skills Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing: This qualification is a basic introduction within a commercial Hair or Barbering environment and includes a variety of basic hairdressing skills.
Core topics include:
- Health and Safety
- Working in Industry
- Shampooing
- Consultation
- Hair and scalp
- Cut women's hair
- Styling and dressing hair
- Introduction to colour techniques
- Promote product and service
- Create an image based on a theme
This qualification is aimed at learners aged 16-18 who need to achieve English and maths GCSE grades 3-9.
For learners who don't meet the Level 2 entry requirements we offer an introduction via the Skills and Employability Pathway.

Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Beauty and Hair Combined
Entry requirement: three grade 3 GCSEs or above.
Core topics include:
- Consultation in hair services
- Health and safety
- Client care and communication in beauty
- Facial treatments
- Manicure
- Pedicure
- Applying make-up
- Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
- Create an image
- Promoting products and services
- Art of dressing hair
- Cut women's hair

Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing: This course covers a wide range of skills and knowledge required for working in the Hairdressing industry.
Core topics:
- Creatively colouring and lightening hair
- Hairdressing consultation services
- Advanced cutting techniques
- Creatively styling and dressing hair
- Hair colouring correction services
- Creative hair design skills.

Work experience is an essential part of all full time study programmes. Learners complete a minimum of 35 hours within an industry linked environment per academic year/qualification.
How Will I Be Assessed?
For Skills Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing and Level 2 Diploma in Beauty and Hair Combined, continuous assessment includes:
- Practical observations
- Online modular tests
- Verbal questioning
Uniform and kit are required to successfully achieve in your assessments.
What could this course lead to?
Skills Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing is aimed at learners looking to start a career in the Hairdressing industry. Learners can progress onto an apprenticeship or further their studies by undertaking the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma.
Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Beauty and Hair Combined is aimed at learners that are looking to start a career in Beauty or Hair - or both. Learners can progress onto an apprenticeship, or further their studies by taking a Level 2 technical qualification in Beauty, Nails, Makeup or Hair.
Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing aims to provide you with a range of specialist technical practical skills and knowledge which will equip you to secure employment or further training within the Hairdressing and Barbering industry.
Employment can be found in the following areas:
- Hair salons
- Spas
- Cruise ships
- Holiday resort hotel salons.
Freelance work or self-employment is available for motivated individuals who wish to run their own business.
