What Will I Study?
Functional Skills English
We offer Functional Skills English qualifications at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. You will study a range of topics to develop your knowledge and skills in Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening.
GCSE English Language
Skills areas covered are Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening, and include:
- Identify explicit and implicit information
- Explain, comment on and analyse a writer's use of language and structure
- Evaluate a text critically
- Compare writers' viewpoints and perspectives
- Descriptive and narrative writing
- Viewpoint writing
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Functional Skills Maths
We offer Functional Skills Maths qualifications at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. You will study a range of topics to develop your knowledge and skills in number, shape and space, and data handling.
GCSE Maths
Skills areas covered include:
- Number
- Algebra
- Ratio
- Proportion and rates of change
- Data handling
- Geometry and measure
- Trigonometry
- Statistics and probability
- Graphs, charts and averages.
GCSE courses start in September. Functional Skills courses start in September, November and January.

The screening assessment is designed to give us an indication of your current literacy and numeracy levels, so that we can identify the best qualification route and class for you. The screening assessment/enrolment process can take up to 1.5 hours per subject.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Functional Skills English: City and Guilds
You will complete 3 examinations in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. You will be entered for your exams as soon as you are ready to sit them. Some examinations are internally assessed, whereas others will be externally assessed. Results are usually available within 4 weeks of your examination date.
GCSE English Language: AQA 8700
You will complete 2 examinations at the end of your course. Each exam is worth 50% of your overall grade and is externally assessed. Results are published on the third Thursday in August, each year.
Functional Skills Maths: City and Guilds
You will complete an exam. You will be entered for your exams as soon as you are ready to sit them. Some examinations are internally assessed, whereas others will be externally assessed. Results are usually available within 4 weeks of your examination date.
GCSE Maths: Pearson
You will complete 3 exams at the end of your course. Each examination is worth 33% of your overall grade and is externally assessed. Results are published in August.

Achieving these qualifications will increase your confidence and motivation, and the skills you gain will be valuable in the workplace or in any further learning.
Successful completion of Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications can help you to progress onto Further Education courses, Higher Education courses and employment.
