Level 1: Full-time Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

• Prepare and use hand tools

• Produce woodworking joints

• Prepare and use portable power tools.

Level 2: Full-time Diploma in Site Carpentry / Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery

• Health and safety

• Principles of building construction, information and communication

• Carry out first fix flooring and roofing

• Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs

• Carry out second fixing operations

• Carry out maintenance

• Set up and operate a circular saw.

Bench variation units

• Produce setting-out details for bench joinery products

• Mark out from setting-out details for bench joinery products

• Manufacture bench joinery products.

Level 3: Full-time Diploma in Site Carpentry / Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery

• Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work

• Carry out first fixing roofing and stairs

• Carry out second fixing double doors and mouldings

• Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery

• Manufacture shaped doors and frames

• Manufacture stairs with turns.

Full-time Courses

All courses are assessed via multiple-choice questions for theory,

and through practical assessments with a set timescale set by City and Guilds.

Based on your entry qualifications, you may enter at either Level 1 or Level 2. Full-time progression is to the next level, based on successful completion of your initial course, proven attendance, and your capabilities during that course.

You could work as an employee or a self-employed contractor for large or small construction companies. You may work on a construction site, at a client’s premises, or in your own workshop.

Depending on where you work, your day-to-day tasks may include:

• Discussing plans and following instructions

• Cutting and shaping timber for floorboards, doors, skirting boards, and window frames

• Making and fitting wooden structures such as staircases, door frames, roof timbers, and partition walls

• Making and assembling fitted and free-standing furniture

• Installing kitchens, cupboards, and shelving

• Building temporary wooden supports to hold setting concrete in place (shuttering)

• Making and fitting interiors in shops, bars, restaurants, offices, and public buildings

• Constructing stage sets for theatre, film, and TV productions.
