Your name: Yousra
What course did you study at Oldham College? Surveying and Design for Construction and the Built Environment Level 3
Yousra moved to England from Morocco at the age of 16, leaving behind her mum, friends and the life she had always known.Â
Just two years later, she has progressed from English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to studying a Surveying and Design for Construction and the Built Environment T Level, as well as becoming our FE Student Governor.Â
Growing up in Morocco, Yousra dreamed of becoming an architect, inspired by the traditional buildings around her. When she found out she would be moving to England, she had just two weeks to prepare. Although excited, leaving her family and adapting to a new country was difficult.Â
When she started at Oldham College, Yousra initially found learning English challenging but soon began to feel more comfortable.Â
“When I walked into my ESOL class, I realised I wasn’t alone. There were students from different countries who had also moved away from their homes and were adapting to a new country. That made me feel comfortable.”Â
Yousra also found support from her teachers, particularly her English teacher, Kasim, who helped her develop her language skills and understand the education system.Â
“My ESOL teachers became almost like home to me. Sometimes, when we had holidays, I actually felt sad because I wanted to come back to college. I felt safe there.”Â
Now studying T Level Construction, Yousra particularly enjoys using Revit software to create 3D building designs, as well as drawing floor plans and elevations by hand. One of her favourite assignments has involved designing a house for a fictional zombie apocalypse.Â
“I really enjoy taking an idea and turning it into a design. One of my favourite projects so far has been our Zombie House project, because it has challenged me to think differently and consider things beyond a typical house design, including security, sustainability and how the building could function in difficult circumstances.”Â
Although the course can be challenging, Yousra enjoys learning new things and is looking forward to completing her 315-hour industry placement, which forms part of her T Level. She hopes to develop her practical skills and learn from people working in the industry.Â
Alongside her studies, Yousra has made the most of opportunities at Oldham College, taking part in basketball, student voice activities and an International Women’s Day panel. Her achievements were also recognised when she received a Resilience Award at the College’s Student Awards.Â
One of her proudest moments came when she was encouraged to apply for the role of Student Governor. Initially, Yousra hadn’t considered applying because she was worried her English wouldn’t be good enough. However, encouragement from staff gave her the confidence to put herself forward.Â
Yousra was shortlisted as one of five candidates and, following an interview, was delighted to be appointed Student Governor.Â
“I realised that English wasn’t a barrier anymore. Coming from another country wasn’t a barrier. Being different wasn’t a barrier.”Â
As FE Student Governor, Yousra represents students at Oldham College, helping ensure their views are heard in strategic decision-making. She has also spoken to hundreds of prospective students at taster sessions and welcome days, encouraging them to get involved.Â
For other young people considering Construction, particularly girls, Yousra has some encouragement.Â
“Go for it! Don’t let stereotypes, your background, your language, or the fear of trying something new stop you from following your dreams.”Â
Reflecting on her journey, Yousra says:Â
“Sometimes, the people around you can believe in you before you fully believe in yourself.”Â
Looking ahead, Yousra hopes to achieve a distinction in her T Level before progressing to university to study architecture.Â
“In the future, I would love to bring elements of Moroccan architectural style into my designs in England, combining my cultural background with my passion for architecture.” Interested in a career in the built environment?
