Performing Arts Level 4
Course Details
What Will I Study?
Ready to take your performance to a professional level? This one-year UAL Level 4 Professional Diploma in Performance is built for performers who have completed Level 3 and want to sharpen their craft before drama school, conservatoire, university or entering the industry.
You will start by learning how the professional world really works: rehearsal etiquette, professional standards, solving problems in the rehearsal room and taking charge of your own training and career plan, supported by practical workshops, guest sessions and lots of live professionally placed work. Then you'll push deeper into your specialism, refining your technique across a range of performance styles and historical periods, exploring how great practitioners have made theatre and creating work for different audiences.
Every performance takes place in a real professional venue, from local favourites Billington's and Whittles to Manchester stages such as 53two and Band on the Wall. You will work to real call times and alongside venue crews, just as you will in your career.
Finally, you will lead your own Specialist Performance Project. You set the vision, plan the rehearsals, manage your time and lead others in your performance giving you directing and choreogrpahy skills, resources, and perform for an audience you have chosen. This is the perfect launchpad to top institutions such as Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) and Arden School of Theatre.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Continuous assessment takes place across three units.
In Units 1 and 2 - Applied Professional Practice and Specialist Performance Practice - you build a professional portfolio and a performance portfolio of research, rehearsal and performance work. Both units are graded Pass or Fail, and you must pass them before starting your final project. Feedback is recorded on the college's digital assessment platform, and one-to-one tutorials review your progress and set stretching targets.
Your overall grade (Pass, Merit or Distinction) comes entirely from Unit 3, your Specialist Performance Project: a self-led performance in a professional venue, supported by a portfolio of annotated scripts, research, rehearsal footage and ongoing evaluation. It is assessed by tutors and externally moderated by University of the Arts London (UAL).
What Could This Course Lead To?
Higher education, drama school or conservatoire training: the course helps you build the portfolio and audition-ready skills you need for competitive places at institutions such as The Royal Central School for Speech and Drama, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and Arden School of Theatre.
It can also take you straight into employment or self-employment in the performing arts, as an Actor, Performer, Theatre Maker, Devising Artist, Drama Facilitator or Workshop Leader, or in roles in theatre-in-education and community arts.
The creative industries are one of the UK's fastest-growing sectors, with key creative jobs projected to grow by 416,000 (27%) between 2025 and 2035 (Skills England, 2026). Around 28% of people in the creative industries are self-employed, twice the UK average, so the professional practice and self-management skills you develop here are exactly what a performing career demands.
