Art & Design Level 2

Try everything before you choose your path. This one-year course lets you explore drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, installation and moving image, mixing traditional skills like observational drawing and print with creative digital tools. You'll build a confident, varied portfolio and discover the area of art and design you love most – ready to specialise at Level 3.

Work experience is an important part of the course. We’ll support you in securing work placements and projects, and our tutors have excellent industry links with employers. We also invite professionals and organisations to deliver masterclasses, guest talks and project briefs, giving you valuable insight into different career routes.

 

There will be continuous assessment across each project. For every project you keep a sketchbook of research and experiments that leads to a final piece, which is assessed through a presentation and exhibition. Feedback is recorded on the college's digital assessment platform and one-to-one tutorials review your progress and set stretching targets. Your final grade comes from your Final Major Project (FMP): an exhibition piece of your own choosing, assessed by tutors and peers and externally moderated.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress to a Level 3 creative practice pathway in Fine Art, Photography, Graphic Design or Fashion & Textiles. In the longer term, art and design can lead to careers as an artist, illustrator, designer, photographer or art teacher. The creative industries are one of the UK's fastest-growing sectors, with key creative jobs projected to grow by 416,000 (27%) between 2025 and 2035 (Skills England, 2026).
