BA (Hons) Education and Early Years Foundation Year

Academic and Professional Development 

This module aims to develop academic study skills and introduces the key concepts, theories and practices of HE study. 

Introduction to Child Development  

This module aims to develop an awareness and understanding of how children learn and develop. Students will explore theoretical approaches to learning and development and identify factors affecting this.  

Introduction to Safeguarding  

This module aims to raise awareness of current legislation, policies and procedures which exists to promote children rights and keep them safe from harm.  

Play 

This module raises an awareness and understanding of the role of play in children’s learning and development. Students will explore different types and stages of play. 

Project Study 

The module allows students to choose a topic of interest relating to children, families and education. Student will complete an independent research project, with support from academic lecturers. 

The BA Education and Early Years foundation course uses a variety of assessments methods designed to assess student’s knowledge and understanding of module teaching, and provide students with sector related skills and competencies. Examples include 

• Essays and reports 

• Poster/Display presentations 

• PowerPoint presentations 

• Activity Plans 

• Research projects 

• Case studies 

Graduates of the foundation years will progress onto the BA (Hons) Education and Early Years degree. This degree can lead to roles in education, research, health and social care such as: 

• Family Support 

• Teaching Assistant (Higher lever/HLTA) 

• Special needs and disability (SEND) 

• Nursery Leadership/Manager 

• Pre-school supervisor 

• Playwork leader 

• Youth worker 

• Learning mentor 

• Local authority advisory roles 

• Family support roles 

• Safeguarding/Pastoral roles within schools, settings and local authorities 

Many students choose to continue to postgraduate study such as School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT), Early Years Initial Teacher Training or Primary Education with QTS (PGCE), social work, speech and language or play therapy. 

Post graduate study could also lead to careers within: 

• Healthcare play specialism 

• Social work 

• Assessor roles 

• Speech therapy 

• Secondary teaching 

• Further education lecturer 

• Higher education lecturer 

• International teaching (TEFL)

Attend interview as required.  

Non-standard applicants may be considered for entry without meeting all the admissions requirements and must demonstrate during interview that they have sufficient general academic skills to be able to undertake the course with relevant experience. 

The preparatory year is also a time to achieve Level 2 Maths and English qualifications if either or both have not yet been achieved. 

Transition to the BA (Hons) Education and Early Years will rely on a PASS of the preparatory year and guidance will be offered to each student to ensure transition to a course is available that meets each student's needs and aspirations. 

An Enhanced DBS check will be required for progression onto the BA (Hons) Education and Early Years once a PASS has been gained on the Preparatory Year.
