Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems Level 3 Award

A new heat pump installer qualification

Oldham College are partnering with the North West Skills Academy to deliver this specialist new training course. The BPEC level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems is for those already working in the plumbing industry who wish to gain the retrofitting skills that are needed to help Greater Manchester become ‘carbon neutral’ by 2038.


What qualifications or experience do I need to study this course?

You should have a trade qualification which is a minimum level 2 N/SVQ in either: Plumbing, Conventional Heating Engineering, Heating & Ventilating (commercial, industrial or residential), Oil-Fired Technical Services, or Gas Installation & Maintenance, or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence. Alternatively, the course is open to heating installers with a minimum 3 years+ of experience in installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by manufacturer courses certification, Gas Safe Register, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS registration.

As well as a trade qualification, you should also have qualifications in water regulations and energy efficiency.

What kind of things will I study and learn?

This course will cover: understanding how the ground and air can act as a source of renewable energy, the main elements of heat pumps, the advantages of the various collector types and emitter types with heat pumps and clear identification of applications for various heat pump systems. You will be provided with a course manual to support your studies.

Assessment consists of a combination of practical and theory assessments including an online exam.

What can I do when I complete the course?

This qualification is designed to ensure you have the understanding to fully comply with the industry regulations and are competent to install and maintain heat pumps.

Will I have to pay for the course?

If you meet the funding criteria the course will be free. To meet this criteria you should either be a resident in the Greater Manchester area, working for an employer based in the Greater Manchester area or are working on a construction setting in the Greater Manchester area.

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered over a 4-day period and will be delivered at the College during the day, in the evenings and online. Specific days are to be confirmed.
