Professor Lorna Unwin OBE

Lorna has joined the Corporation as Associate Member. She is Professor Emerita (Vocational Education) at the UCL Institute of Education and an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Manchester. Lorna was born and went to school and university in Manchester. Her first career was in journalism and then she taught in further and adult education. She has held academic posts at the Open University, University of Sheffield and University of Leicester where she was the Director of the Centre for Labour Market Studies. Lorna窶冱 research interests focus on the changing nature and development of occupational expertise and on the workplace as a site for learning and the improvement of life chances. She has a particular interest in apprenticeship as a model of learning and also in the historical development of further and technical education in Britain. She chaired the Commission of Inquiry into the Role of Group Training Associations and was academic adviser to the Commission on Adult Vocational Teaching and Learning (CAVTL). Her current projects include a study of what happens to 16-18 year olds in both England and in Greater Manchester who don't achieve a grade C/4 in GCSE English and Maths (with colleagues at the University of Manchester) and a study of aerospace engineering apprentices in England and Germany (with colleagues at UCL and the University of Cologne).
