STAR EMPLOYER | McGoff Construction Ltd

Oldham College and McGoff Construction Ltd formed a collaborative partnership last year to help our Level 3 Construction students secure valuable work experience placements.

McGoff piloted these placements on their £53 million new build development, known as Downtown Project’, located on the banks of the River Irwell in Salford.

This comprises six statement blocks ranging in height from four storeys up to 14, yet is also interlinked and with a mix of 374 one, two and three-bed apartments.

One success story is Brandon Cope, a Level 3 Joinery student, who McGoff placed with its supply-chain joinery Site Manager, Chris Mellor – Director of DRP Joinery Ltd.

Brandon wasted no time in impressing his hosts.

His enthusiasm to learn and can-do attitude quickly transformed his work experience into a real work job opportunity.

As soon as Brandon completed his technical certificate at Oldham College, DRP Joinery offered him full-time employment – a successful outcome that delighted the McGoff Site Management team.

Keith Gill, Downtown Project Manager at McGoff Construction said, “To have the opportunity to be on site and gain first-hand experience can only be a good thing for students who want to work within the industry. Brandon’s college gave him knowledge and understanding of carpentry and joinery, and the work placement allowed him to display his work ethic and attitude towards the industry. This was quickly noticed by our joinery contractor.”

“This is an excellent outcome for Brandon. Not only is he now earning a wage but he is developing his knowledge in all aspects of carpentry and joinery through his day-to-day activities. Brandon is also enrolled and currently working towards completing his NVQ, which will see him regarded as a skilled worker once attained.”

“Going forward we would welcome similar candidates at McGoff Construction, introducing them to live construction sites to aid their knowledge, gain more experience and ultimately support their employment opportunities.”
