Employers are regularly visiting Oldham College to hold events with our students – and to talent-spot the stars of the future.

Last week our Level 3 Software students met the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s ‘Bed Every Night’ team to show them the inspirational outcomes from their recent one-week workshop with Digital Advantage.

The group had been set the task of using creative thinking and problem solving to invent and establish a viable business idea and digital assets.

They decided they wanted to look at homelessness and how to create a points card that could only be spent on specific items like accommodation, food and travel.

They came up with The Hope Card – a secure and innovative digital solution to provide guidance for the homeless and help to support them back into society – and built a prototype website, branding and video in just five days.

Their exciting proposals are now under discussion at GM level – so watch this space to see what happens next(!).

Two Oldham College students did us proud at the UK’s largest skills, apprenticeships and careers event – World Skills UK.

Jonathan Sherratt, an Electrical apprentice, and Terri Watson, a Nail Technician, both competed at these national finals at the NEC in Birmingham in late November for which we had a record number of nominees this time.

Terri ‘nailed’ a bronze with her efforts and is now a full-time beautician.

Jonathan also competed brilliantly in a gruelling top-two day Skill Electric UK final – a contest that, literally, went down to the wires(!)

Brother UK held a fantastic two-day event with our Level 2 Digital Technical students.

Facilitated though the GM Chamber, their sales team came to campus to talk about skills, qualities, how to stand out, CVs and personal statements.

This was all followed by the nail-biting experience of mock interviews: all designed  to prepare learners for the world of work.
