Student brings carnival roots to Oldham
Nathaly Godoy came to Oldham from Brazil only two years ago. Last week she starred in her first professional show at Oldham Coliseum as part of the chorus along with 20 other Oldham College learners.
Nathaly started singing, dancing and working up small plays for family from a young age but never felt confident enough to perform in front of strangers. That changed when she started at Oldham College. She says “I wouldn't be able to be part of this chorus if it wasn't for the Tutor’s guidance. Being part of the show is an amazing opportunity, it's great to work with people who genuinely love performing and being on stage, the atmosphere is indescribable, hearing the audience laugh and cheer is what pushes us all to keep going.”
Meat Pie, Sausage Roll is a new musical, commissioned by the Oldham Coliseum Theatre and written by former student, Lindzi Williams and Cathy Crabb. It is based around Oldham Athletic’s memorable 1990 season and is a heart warming story of family and loyalty.
Oldham College has been involved in a number of Coliseum shows over the years including ‘Our Day Out’ and ‘Dreamers’. After the success of these shows, the team at Oldham Coliseum asked if the college would have any students who would be interested in joining the chorus.
Miranda Parker, Acting and Musical Theatre Tutor believes, “Being able to provide learners with this type of experience is a real acknowledgement to the college. The students involved will not only have a credit to add to their CV’s but also a better understanding of the world of work they are entering.”
Kevin Shaw, our Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Oldham Coliseum Theatre
said “The Meat Pie, Sausage Roll chorus play fans of Oldham Athletic in the early 1990s, when the whole town got behind the team. We wanted a real mix of people, young and old, all with existing singing and stage ability to perform alongside our cast of professional actors. The students from Oldham College’s Performing Arts course have been a joy to work with - full of enthusiasm and professionalism - and we’re pleased to be able to provide them with the experience of working in a professional theatre.
