Sparks fly for students becoming future builders and electricians

Posted on: 08 February 2018

Two Oldham College Electrical and Plumbing Traineeship students have started work experience placements with First Choice Homes Oldham.

Declan Clayton and Thomas Townson started their Traineeships in September and have successfully completed the 10 week in-house training at Oldham College. They are now on to the final stage – a 4 week placement at First Choice Homes Oldham.

Both learners are working with experienced professional operatives, gaining hands on skills and site experience within domestic and professional property environments. During the course of their placements they will put into practice the work skills they have learnt through sector specific vocational workshops at the college.

The short, intense Traineeship is a fast track to apprenticeships for work ready candidates that need extra skills development to secure the job. The first 10 weeks of the programme includes vocational workshops, professional and employability skills coaching, interview techniques, employment rights and Maths and English programmes where necessary.

Siobhan McCoy, First Choice Homes Oldham Property Care General Manager, said “We are proud to be able to help students work towards their career goals. Our Property Care service supports the next generation of tradespeople. We want to work with students wherever possible to help them to take up careers in construction, repairs and maintenance, ideally with First Choice Homes Oldham when we have vacancies. We work with a range of local partners and organisations to support local communities and people in Oldham.”
