19 year old Lucy Collins from Hollinwood is an Apprentice in Business Administration at University Campus Oldham (UCO) and the first Apprentice taken on by UCO.

After completing her ‘A’ Levels at St Augustine of Canterbury RC High School, Lucy chose an Apprenticeship because she didn’t feel that going on to higher education was for her. She has gained invaluable work experience and benefited from lots of new skills and abilities from her experience at UCO.

Lucy says: “Before starting my Apprenticeship I was very indecisive and often hesitated over making decisions whereas now I have the ability to take the initiative and make a quick and firm decision. I have developed a better understanding of the working environment and developed a professional manner that I can use in all aspects of my working life.”

To gain a feel for Lucy’s work, she describes a recent day at UCO when an applicant day for the LLB (Hons) Law course took place. “It was all hands on deck as the Administration team and myself strived to deliver an excellent level of service to our potential students. This involved ensuring that we guided students to the appropriate room, that everyone was confident in what needed to be done and presenting applicants with a confident and professional overlook of our establishment. I was involved in the registration and check-in process so it was vital to keep calm under pressure and aid my colleague in registering students on the appropriate lists. My team and I deemed the applicant day to be a success, as everything ran smoothly and we received a positive response.”

Lucy’s Line Manager, Marie Taylor, HE Quality and Administration Manager, said: “Lucy has worked out exceptionally well. She’s a very bright young girl who isn’t phased by anything and likes to take on a challenge. She is very professional and we’re really pleased with her work so glad that we can provide her with this opportunity.”

Lucy is still undecided as to her future plans but would advise any future apprentices to use the opportunity of an Apprenticeship wisely and gain as much experience and knowledge as possible.
