If you really want to look at improving your conflict management in depth, you could buy a book that would help but just to get you started ...
Use Empathy. Always try to see the other person’s point of view. You will be more likely to create a win/win situation if you genuinely see the other person’s issues and possible solutions. Find out the other person’s point of view before putting across your own. This is a very powerful signal that you are wanting to create a solution that is good for both sides.
Get your point of view across using neutral and non-emotive language. This helps not to escalate the situation and gives a clear signal that you are calm and looking for a solution, not your own way at all costs. You are showing assertiveness and not aggression.
Make sure that you are emphasising co-operation and finding a solution together. This signals a ‘no blame’ approach to the issue and that you both have strengths to bring to the solution. It also signals that discussion and compromise are important.
Generate lots of possible solutions. Don’t just leap at the first solution that presents itself. You may come back to it as the best solution but exploring a number makes it more likely it will be a good solution for all.
