Oldham College shortlisted as Learning Provider of the Year
Oldham College is shortlisted in the category of Learning Provider of the Year for a Skills for Business Award which celebrates the outstanding contribution that skills and learning make to businesses across Greater Manchester.
This award recognises a skills provider or college which delivers significant skills training and can show how it has delivered innovative solutions to support workforce development needs. They must demonstrate a proven track record of effectively engaging with businesses to identify skills needs and to deliver skills and training to the workforce which achieve real business benefits.
Oldham College’s strategic priorities include working with key partners in Oldham and the City Region around skills delivery, planning and development whilst engaging with employers and industry bodies to develop a curriculum aligned to the labour market and employer needs. The college’s approach to finding and delivering bespoke training solutions for businesses helps to ensure that people have the relevant skills required to tackle the demands of the future.

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony taking place at The Point, Lancashire County Cricket Club on the evening of Wednesday 1 July. The other shortlisted organisations in this category are Damar Training, Mantra Learning, National Schools Training National School Apprenticeships, North West Skills Academy Ltd, Rochdale, STEGA Ltd, The Manchester College and Trafford College.
The Skills for Business Awards are hosted by a partnership which includes Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Greater Manchester Learning Provider Network and New Economy.
Oldham College engages with businesses about their skills needs in many different ways from tailoring traineeship and apprenticeship schemes to developing bespoke training for employees. The college recently launched a Job Shop where employers can market their full time apprenticeships and jobs to students progressing through college.
Collaborating with organisations across the borough, the college boasts many success stories. This includes upskilling the Learning and Development teams at both the Manchester Health & Social Care Trust and Pennine Acute Hospital NHS Trust. The excellent success rates of Oldham College’s pioneering Sewing Academy demonstrates a positive impact on employment and skills in the region.
Oldham College collaborates with Oldham MBC around the economy and skills in many different ways including developing a ‘Dementia Champions’ programme to meet objectives for Oldham Social Services. The development work undertaken by the college and University Campus Oldham in creating a bespoke solution for the Council in relation to its Early Years’ settings has wider Greater Manchester application as it provides content for a Higher Apprenticeship trailblazer.
The college has developed Employer Advisory Boards for each faculty area, inviting employers in to contribute to the planning, design and delivery of the curriculum. By providing ‘real-world’ challenges, mentors and work experience, employer involvement helps students to develop specialist knowledge and wider employability skills as well as addressing the skills gap.
