Oldham College entrepreneurs achieve sweet success
Two budding Oldham College entrepreneurs have been awarded the top two prizes in the Edge Challenge. Peter Jones Enterprise Academy (PJEA) student, Daniel Arundel won second prize netting himself £1,250 while fellow student Hassan Iqbal, stole the show and won the £3,000 top prize in the national enterprise competition. PJEA is part of the Oldham College provision.
The competition, run by an independent education charity, the Edge Foundation, in partnership with the PJEA and Gazelle Colleges Group, aims to help young entrepreneurs get their business start-ups off the ground.
To get to the final stage Hassan and Daniel had to pitch their ideas to a business panel in London before joining other finalists at The Skills Show in Birmingham yesterday.
Former Dragon and Patron of The Skills Show, Theo Paphitis, awarded both students their prize money. First prize of £3,000 was awarded to Hassan who has built up a global technology business named Creative Pixels. Hassan started working with computers aged only eight and in recent years, as part of his business, has successfully won contracts with a national social enterprise, the University of Greenwich and many international clients.
Young baker Daniel was awarded second prize of £1,250 for Arundel Bakery. Daniel turned his hobby of cooking into a business following in the footsteps of his mum who is also in the catering trade. His bakery turns out a range of cakes and pastries. He says that his success to date is mainly down to word of mouth.
