Mentoring our business future
David Pegg and Chris Woods are among business leaders who have signed up to mentor Oldham College students as part of their ‘Meet the Mentor’ scheme. The college’s vocational offer in addition to mentoring includes employer involvement in educating the next generation with a series of programmes designed to shape curriculum and be responsive to industry needs.
All academy students from the Faculty of Financial and Professional Services at the college are assigned an industry specialist mentor for one to one help with their careers and learning. The initiative helps address the skills gap and develop students’ specialist knowledge and wider employability skills.
Oldham College has Employer Advisory Boards where employers contribute to the planning, design and delivery of the curriculum. EAB members also offer a range of on the job training experiences such as 6 week internships, work experience and apprenticeships. The college works with local and national, high profile firms such as dsgn:uk, First Choice Homes, STA Travel, Oldham Council, Bupa, NHS and NatWest to offer learners first-hand experience of busy business environments.
Furkan Uddin, Head of Faculty, Financial & Professional Services said “We are developing and educating young people for the careers of the future. We want to show more businesses how mentoring can make a real difference to their bottom line through building leadership skills and foster loyal employees.”
David Pegg from Bupa became a mentor because he wanted to give back “I am a firm believer in the importance of education, and being fit for the workplace, from my own experience as a student and doing summer work experience. Being a mentor has also shown me the importance of the workplace being ready for the students of the 21st century – it has been very insightful to meet with my mentees and to bring me back up to date with the latest technology and fashions.”
