Hair and Beauty students new £6M building
This week, Oldham College’s four hundred Hair and Beauty students returning from their Easter Break will resume learning in their brand new state-of-the-art £6 million building.
Featuring a number of modern learning spaces for hair, beauty and therapy training, the cutting edge facility provides them with a contemporary learning environment. Open to the public, the ground floor boasts stylish commercial hair and beauty therapy facilities including a dedicated spa, makeup and nail rooms. Adjacent to the new reception on Middleton Road, the three storey building is located close to the corner of the College campus, permitting greater visibility and easier access from the town for hair and beauty clients.
Head of the Retail & Commercial Faculty, Diane Howard who has worked at the College for almost thirty years is thrilled with the new building. She said “It’s so exciting to see this amazing new facility which has been especially designed to meet all of our learners’ and clients’ needs. It cements our commitment to students by providing high quality buildings and equipment to support the excellent teaching and support services. Staff and students are really excited about this new development and have all helped to turn our vision into reality.”
It was exactly one year ago when the contract was signed with Oldham-based Willmott Dixon to deliver this project. Mike Lane of Willmott Dixon said: “It has been a fantastic experience working closely with Mace and the Oldham College team to achieve in just about 12 months a fully operational brand new state of the art teaching facility.”
This is the final building to be completed in the College’s current capital development programme which reflects its commitment to providing high quality and industry standard facilities to complement the excellent teaching and learning services. In line with growth sectors in the economy, Oldham College is modernising its facilities and curriculum to transform its campus into a 21st century learning hub.
One of the fastest growth sectors in the UK economy, the hair and beauty sector employs 250,000 people across 55,000 businesses and accounts for 1% of UK economy. Hairdressing, beauty and therapies are diverse professions that can take learners into virtually any work environment, from the local high street salon, to cruise ships, prisons, hospitals, TV studios and lots of places in between. Oldham College offers courses in Hairdressing, Barbering, Beauty Therapy, Nail Technology, Media Make up which will be delivered in state-of the-art surroundings. The building will be open to the public to view the new facilities at the College’s next Open day which takes place on Saturday 13th June. The facilities are already open and the College’s Hair and Beauty training establishment has an expanding client base. Any member of the public can take advantage of treatments at discounted rates by becoming a client.
