Sport, Travel & Public Services

Study programmes within our faculty cover Sport Performance & Excellence, Sport and Active Leaser, Fitness Instruction, the Football Academy, Rugby Academy, Basketball Academy plus Airport Operations, Travel & Tourism and Uniformed Public Services.

The Oldham College Academy of Sport has a wide range of courses that include qualifications in performance and excellence, as well as coaching, exercise and fitness. We have great staff, coaches and facilities and are working in partnership with local professional sporting teams including Oldham Athletic, Oldham Rugby League Football Club, Manchester Giants Basketball Club and Futsal.

Our Travel & Tourism courses introduce you to the dynamic aviation and airline industry. They cover a wide variety of key skills including customer service, geography, European destinations, the UK Travel Industry, preparing for employment and accessible tourism. Our courses will also provide you with a work placement with a travel related organisation.
If you aspire to work for any of the Emergency Services, such as the Police, Fire Service or Prison Service, then our courses provide an insight into what your working life would be like. You will learn and develop practical teamwork and management skills including how to deal with major incidents, police powers, codes of discipline and the effects of crime on society. You will also access relevant work experience too.

If you want to work for any of the Military Services, such as the RAF, Army, Navy or Marines, we can help you achieve your goal. You will develop knowledge and skills in how to deal with major incidents, codes of discipline, map reading and expedition skills. We also provide relevant work experience in your chosen services which could range from a 5 day residential with the Army or Navy, or a map reading and adventurous activities residential course.

Study Programme

All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

This means you will:

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
  • Participate in meaningful work experience
  • Enjoy a range of enrichment opportunities e.g. basketball, archery, skiing and sign language
  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
