The course is free of cost if you do not already hold a GCSE maths grade A* - C or 4-9 grade.

You will study all elements of the functional and GCSE maths curriculum at a level appropriate for you, including the following:

  • Four rules of number (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
  • Decimals 
  • Fractions
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Algebra
  • Data Handling
  • Area, volume and measurement 
  • Exam practice
No Formal Entry Requirements

For both functional skills and GCSE you will be assessed regularly in class through a variety of questions, quizzes, short tests and end of term assessments so that we can make sure you are progressing and provide the appropriate support to help you do so. In addition to this, your qualification is decided by a final exam.  Functional Skills will be a pass / fail grade and GCSE is graded using the new numerical system of 9 - 1. Details of these exams are shown below:

Functional Skills

You will complete one final exam covering all topics in the curriculum at the level you have been studying. You will have the option to complete your exam online (levels 1 and 2 only) or on paper.



You will be sitting 3 final exams in May / June, attendance to all 3 exams is compulsory to gain a grade.  There is 1 non-calculator paper and 2 calculator papers.  The decision to sit the higher or foundation tier will be made using your regular assessment results and progress in class.

Progression routes include vocational and academic courses at a range of levels including L3 / A Level.

Functional Skills will also prepare you for GCSE.This course will give you a relevant and up-to-date qualification which will boost your employability and / or your confidence in your current role.

  • Students must be aged 19+
  • There are no formal entry requirements, but all students will have to complete an assessment and interview prior to the course commencing to determine which qualification and level of maths you will study.
  • Please allow up to 2 hours for the assessments.

This course is designed to help students improve their overall maths skills. We offer both GCSE and functional skills options.  There are a range of classes available including morning, afternoon and evening sessions. In addition, it is for those students who wish to progress to further academic or vocational study but who do not yet have the necessary grades to do so. It enables you to gain a nationally recognised qualification and improves confidence & ability in a range of maths skills.

We will invite you in to undertake an assessment which will tell us what level of Maths you can study - this will be wither GCSE or Functional Skills depending on the results of your assessment.

If you are interested you will need to apply for this course and we will send you an invitation to attend an assessment in due course.

There is no requirement to complete work experience on this course.

Study Programme

All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

This means you will:

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
  • Participate in meaningful work experience
  • Enjoy a range of enrichment opportunities e.g. basketball, archery, skiing and sign language
  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
