Study on this course will offer diverse career opportunities. You might crew for theatres or cruise ships, become a lighting designer, stage manager or sound engineer. You may work for a touring company, freelance for many entertainment organisations or take up a career in alternative industries, such as Events Management, Advertising, Marketing, Media or Retail.  Salaries can vary enormously according to your career path. Depending on the role and the organisation, you could potentially earn between £18,000 - £35,000 per year.

All full time courses for home students aged 16 - 18 inclusive are free.

    As well as developing technical skills, you will participate in maths and English classes to ensure that you are improving core skills which will help you gain professional employment in the Performing Arts industry.
Level 3 – 4 x GCSE grades A-C or level 4-9 ( including English and Maths)

You will be assessed through practical assignments and live projects, for example extensive productions for dance, music, drama and musical theatre, tours, portfolio work. 

This qualification will enable you to progress to university and technical theatre institutes, into employment or onto an apprenticeship. 
You will be required to take part in an interview. You will be given further information on application.
Do you want a career backstage? Does becoming a stage lighting designer, live sound engineer, video specialist, production manager, set designer or stage manager appeal to you? Do you want to become a member of a professional team of men and women in black who are the backbone of the industry? If so, you have come to the right place. During your studies you will work in our specialist studios and professional theatre participating in regular skills and technique classes, productions, tours, master-classes, enrichment and competitions. As well as our on-site shows and workshops at the Grange Theatre, we respond to the needs of schools, community groups and Performing Arts employers, providing valuable work experience opportunities for all our students.
You will experience the world of work by operating on productions in professional theatres & venues, Front-of-House at the Grange Theatre, teaching technical skills in schools and the wider community. You will also work with industry specialists participating in master-classes. Your tutor will help you to find valuable work experience in professional theatres/organisations around Greater Manchester.

Study Programme

All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
  • Participate in meaningful work experience
