Are you ready to take your first steps towards an exciting career in the media industry?  During this two-year course you will learn a variety of skills to help you on your journey.  

Presenting programmes, directing short films, working as a camera operator, and video editing are amongst the many useful skills you will acquire and develop on our Level 3 media course. 

During your studies, you will carry out your work in our specialist TV and radio studios, editing suites, and animation suite, developing a range of skills in creative media that will provide you with an excellent foundation in the media industry.  


Our level 3 media course is an appropriate balance of practical and theory work, providing all the background knowledge you need in order to succeed in your practical assignments.  All our media tutors are industry specialists, having worked in a variety of media related roles, and have a full understanding of the structure of the media industry and how it works.  This course is designed specifically for you to gain useful industry related skills, such as:

  • Short film making (planning, filming, and editing)
  • Video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro in our dedicated video editing suite
  • Understanding different camera angles for video and photography
  • Working in a TV studio on a multi-camera shoot in our specialist TV studio
  • Radio presenting and production
  • Audio editing using Adobe Audition in our dedicating audio editing suite
  • Logo animation and digital special effects creation using Adobe After Effects
  • Script writing for film and TV
  • Stop-motion animation techniques in our dedicated animation suite
  • Creating magazine page layouts using Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Design and create your own media product (short film, documentary, photography portfolio, radio show, animation, or podcast)
  • Creating a show reel of your work to send to potential future employers




You will be assessed through a series of practical coursework assignments.  During the final year, you will work on your final major project, where you can put your new skills to work by creating an individual media product of your choice, such as a short film, documentary, photography portfolio, radio show, animation, or podcast.

Our media tutors have excellent industry links and through these we can offer all students the opportunity to work with specialists in a variety of fields.

You will have chance to work with media organisations and local radio stations to create:

  • Adverts
  • Music videos
  • Live web streams
  • Promotional videos
  • Content for live shows.

    • In your second year, we will help you locate suitable university courses and provide guidance on the completion of UCAS forms and personal statements
  • An apprenticeship
  • Full time employment
  • TV presenter up to £100,000
  • Camera Operator up to £700 per day
  • Journalist, Animator, Marketing Manager, Advertiser up to £40,000
Level 3 – 4 x GCSE grades A-C or level 4-9 ( including English and Maths)

You will be required to audition and take part in an interview. You will be given further information on application.

Study Programme

All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
