The Diploma in Legal Studies is for anyone interested in law and with a curious, analytical and enquiring mind. You do not need any previous legal knowledge or experience to undertake this qualification.  The course is engaging, varied and will help you develop key skills in legal drafting, research, analysis and presentations. The course provides the basic foundations for your route into a career in law or for further study.

You will study a variety of units, which are assignment based: Principles of Criminal Liability; Principles of Contract Liability; Principles of Negligence; Law in the Workplace; Civil Litigation; Consumer Rights; Family Law; and Wills and Succession. There is also one mandatory multiple-choice exam unit, which is: The Legal Environment. As part of the programme of study you will develop the study skills needed to progress onto the Level 3 Law programme and further into higher Education. You will also develop the employability skills required to work within a legal environment and as such you will be required to dress appropriately for working within a that environment.

All units are assignment based. There is one, multiple-choice exam unit.

You will take part in enrichment and work related projects as well as law related trips, the Oldham college works closely with individuals who work within various legal fields and as such you will be required to attend court visits and lectures from guest speakers such as barristers and solicitors.

After completing this qualification you could progress on to:

  • Access to HE Law Pathway

 

Upon completion of a Level 3 Programme, you could continue your journey into higher Education at  UCO to study for your LLB (Hons) or a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice

This course will lead you on the path to a career in law or related areas such as HR, business or other professional roles. The average salary for roles within Financial and Professional Services in the North West is £23,000 per annum.

Particular roles and average starting salaries: Solicitors £26,000-£35,000; barristers £12,000-£42,000; trainee legal executives and trainee solicitors £15,000-£28,000; and legal secretary £17,000-£18,000.

Must have GCSE English and maths at Grade 3 or above
