Health and Social Care

During the course you will study a number of topics including carer roles, work placement preparation, health and social care needs, rights and responsibilities at work, job opportunities, creative and therapeutic activities and the impact of diet on health.

Level 2 – 4 x GCSE grade D or level 3 (including English and Maths)

Explanation of entry requirements

Course is assessed by written coursework, practical tasks and includes work experience.  

Progression on to level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care or another level 2 course. On completion of level 3 opportunities for progression include Degrees in Adult Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Midwifery, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Theatre Practitioner, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Paramedic, Youth Work and Foundation Degrees in Health and Social Care.

  • Level 2 - 3 GCSE* E and above including maths and English
  • For internal progression, successful completion of a foundation programme which must include functional skills Level 1 math and English

GCSE maths and English at C and above, DBS (Disclosing and Barring Service) verification will also be required.

English and maths

English and maths provide the skills you need to operate confidently, effectively and independently in learning, life and work. At Oldham College we are committed to developing these skills throughout your time with us. You will receive an initial assessment and, if you have not already achieved A*- C GCSE in these subjects, you will be supported in working towards this during your time with us in specialist classes at a level appropriate to you. If you have already achieved A*-C, you will continue to have these vital skills developed within your chosen course of study.

The introductory Diploma aims to prepare you for progression onto Level 2 courses in Health and Social Care or Early Years. The level 1 course is designed to cover a range of topics providing you with the knowledge and skills required for employment or further study in the health or social care sectors.

Study Programme

All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

This means you will:

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
  • Participate in meaningful work experience
  • Enjoy a range of enrichment opportunities e.g. basketball, archery, skiing and sign language
  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
