Intermediate Apprenticeship In Fashion & Textiles

Minimum wage is £3.40 per hour but this is employer dependent.
A good level of sewing is required, if you do not have this experience you could access our 6 week sewing course to help gain the skills required. Please contact the Sewing Academy for further information. 

The Fashion and Textiles Apprenticeship program is an exclusive combination of training and career specific work experience. The apprentice will be working with one employer for the entire course and will enable the learner to develop skills in the industry and provide opportunity for both the employer and the learner to develop a long and sustainable relationship. 

Learners will complete between 11 and 13 units of study over the garment technology pathway for the duration of 12-18 months which will advance their skills to fit in with the industry for production. You will work closely alongside your supervisor and other staff members and gain valuable knowledge of the industry you are working with. This could be a variety of manufacturers that produce work wear, sportswear, fashion garments, transportation, food industry products, bridal wear etc.

You will focus on the sewing aspect of manufacture and increase your skills and quality in this area as well as developing product knowledge of the industry. You will understand how a manufacturing company operates within the textile industry.

Apprenticeships can lead to full time employment in the industry, Level 4 apprenticeships, University. Career paths could lead to fashion designing, production supervisor, pattern drafter and grader, garment technologists, quality control supervisor. Salaries can be up to £45,00.

Assessment will be through your coursework, observations in the workplace, practical and written work. You will work towards gaining your units of study by attending the college one day a week and will also have regular visits to your workplace to review your progress. 

  • Functional Skills in English and Maths
  • Concession for English and Maths if  GCSEs are grade C or above

If you want to progress onto a Fashion & Textile apprenticeship but do not have any skills in the industry, you can attend our 6 week sewing course which is taught throughout the year. This is funded for 16-18 year olds or people who are receiving benefits such as: Universal Credit, Job Seekers Allowance or Income Support. Study Programme

All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

This means you will:

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
  • Participate in meaningful work experience
  • Enjoy a range of enrichment opportunities e.g. basketball, archery, skiing and sign language
  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
