Bridging Course ESOL A

The ESOL Bridging Course is a full time course for learners whose first language is not English.  On the course you will improve and develop your English skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  Also, you will improve your vocabulary and grammar skills.  Learners who haven't a GCSE pass will also study maths.  The course will also cover personal development and citizenship elements.  Learners also take part in trips and projects.

One to One

Trips and projects

You will be assessed by regular tests and in class activities.  At the end of the course learners will take external exams.

Most learners will benefit from external work experience and complete one week or 35 hours on placement.  All other learners will take part in experience of work with college.

Learners will progress to the next level of learning, on to the Level 1 ESOL vocational provision or into vocational study across college including functional skills or GCSE.  Alternatively learners will develop their language skills so they an access employment.

The course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are eligible.  We can check your eligibility at assessment.

Study Programme


All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

This means you will:

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
  • Participate in meaningful work experience
  • Enjoy a range of enrichment opportunities e.g. basketball, archery, skiing and sign language
  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
