  • The median salary for Retail in the North West is £15,000 per annum.
  • Examples of median annual salaries for the retail sector occupations include: buyer/purchasing officer £29,000, travel agent £17,000, elementary sales occupation £11,000 and retail cashier/checkout operator £9,000.

If you are aged 16-23 the Skills Funding Agency will fund the cost of the training.
If you are aged 24+ an employer contribution would be required.

The course has been designed with the help of employers to attract new people into the retail industry and upskill the existing workforce. It involves technical knowledge and real practical experience. The assessments will be completed in the workplace with functional skills classes delivered at college in the main campus.

Progression routes include the Level 3 Retail Skills or higher level Apprenticeship courses.

As a student of Oldham College you will have full use of all the college facilities

The course will include working effectively in a retail team understanding customer service in the retail sector, understanding the retail selling process, understanding how individuals and teams contribute to effectiveness of a retail business, understanding how a retail business maintains health and safety on its premises, understanding security and loss prevention in a retail business, understanding the handling of customer payments in a retail business with optional units to suit the learners workplace.  

Level 2 Certificate in Retail Skills
Technical Certificate in Retail Skills
Functional Skills Level 1 English and Maths (unless already accredited)

This qualification is aimed at individuals who are working within a retail environment and would like to further their skills as sales assistants. There are a range of specialist sales units that apply to a wide range of sub-sectors within the retail industry.

All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

This means you will:

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
  • Participate in meaningful work experience
  • Enjoy a range of enrichment opportunities e.g. basketball, archery, skiing and sign language
  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
